Cahokia was a massive city located near modern-day St. Louis . They controlled most of the area of the midwest, including the valuable trade routes along the Mississippi River. Signs of their control and influence can be found at the furthest reaches of that waterway , as well as in the mysterious mound structures that they built. These mounds could reach over a hundred feet high, and were rooted in Cahokian mystic and spiritual beliefs – a belief system rooted in the importance of pride in self, community, and the collective accomplishments of all Cahokians. Many of these mounds still exists today.
For the Cahokians, community was the center of life. They took a fierce pride in their people, their achievements and the things that they built. For a Cahokian, no problem was ever completely insurmountable. No matter the challenge, whatever the difficulty, even the darkest prospects were faced with the same implacable drive to survive and thrive. They did not believe in hopelessness.
But sometimes, this same pride can lead to overconfidence in the face of superior forces . And some of the artifacts the Cahokians left behind point towards a cataclysmic event that destroyed their city and their culture. The exact nature of the event is a discussion for another time, but even though most researchers theorize that climate change causes their destruction, other clues point towards some massively-powerful antagonistic force that virtually erased the Cahokians from the landscape – so much so that when future European explorers found the region, it was much less densely populated that surrounding areas.
