The Nabateans were legendary for their ability to strike against anybody who threatened them, even the most powerful armies and empires. Rooted in ancient nomadic tribes who banded together for protection, the Nabatean trading caravans that criss-crossed the ancient world consolidated their culture in a fortified base that would grow in the hidden city of Petra, in modern-day Jordan.
Nabateans embraced duality . They were peaceful traders until crossed, when they fought back with unmatched ferocity. Nomads who built one of the world’s great cities. Nobody knew what to anticipate from the them, and that’s just the way the Nabateans liked it.
This commitment to adapting to circumstances no matter how harsh was a great source of strength for the Nabateans - it rendered them immune to dogma and unconscious obedience. But it also required constant vigilance and self-knowledge, a standard that is difficult to maintain across a whole culture.
The Nabateans were the ultimate manipulators. But sometimes, its easy to get lost among competing sets of lies, and it will only pull you farther away from the Truth.
