What we call “Western Civilization” had it's origins with the Sumerians . To neighboring people, the Sumerians were so advanced as to seem like another species altogether. It appears that around the time, some segments of humanity gained the ability of abstract thought, and this development became the bedrock on which the Sumerian Empire was built.
The Sumerians invented systems of writing, of city-building and of warfare that had never been seen before. But the most important advance they made was in the ability to think abstractly. This led to an egalitarian culture where anybody who could show that they could think could become a Sumerian. But this was a radical change, and inspired countless adversaries and enemies who wanted nothing more than to destroy this new, alien way of living that the Sumerian represented.
These less-evolved neighbors continually fought losing wars with the Sumerians, growing more and more desperate to destroy their great rival. Finally, they appealed to the region’s other major power, the corrupt Akkadian Empire , promising support if they would invade. The war between the Akkadians and the Sumerians changed the course of human history. If it had gone differently, who knows what today would look like?
However, even though the Akkadians were victorious, the numerous conquered Sumerians who fled in every direction only brought their ideals with them, creating dozens of tiny Sumerian offshoots, spreading their Truth across the entire region, and eventually the world.
